A red-brick Colonial Revival college hall with a pedimented portico of tall white columns, a rooftop cupola and ivy on the right wing, seen across a broad green lawn with a small white birdbath in the foreground. The caption names it Marion College of Marion, Virginia, a women's college that operated in the town from the 1870s until the mid-20th century. The building's classical portico and dome-topped cupola were typical of the academic architecture favored by Southern colleges of the period.
