Market Square in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is shown as a commercial center, with three- and four-story brick blocks, storefronts shaded by awnings, utility poles, and a horse-drawn wagon in the street. Signs for Frank W. Knight Shoes and Presto Pharm. identify two of the businesses facing the square. Portsmouth had long been a port and shipbuilding town, and Market Square remained its civic and retail heart in the early 1900s, when horse traffic and small storefronts still shaped the downtown streetscape.
