A three-story brick school with stone trim, tall multi-pane windows, and stepped parapets stands at a street corner, young shade trees along the lawn. The caption identifies it as Marquette High School in Alton, Illinois, a Mississippi River industrial city north of St. Louis. Marquette was a Catholic secondary school, and the building's scale and formal front fit the city's early twentieth-century institutional growth. Alton's river trade and manufacturing linked it closely to St. Louis.
