The photograph shows the interior of Martha Washington's bedroom at Mount Vernon, with a canopied bed hung in floral-print fabric, white bedding, a patterned carpet, and a small mirror on the left wall. Mount Vernon, George Washington's Potomac plantation, had been open to visitors since the mid-19th century, and views of the mansion's furnished rooms were popular souvenirs for early 20th-century tourists.
