About this postcard
The room shown is Martha Washington's attic bedchamber at Mount Vernon, with a canopied four-poster bed hung with fringed white curtains, a wing chair and footstool, a covered stool, and a red-japanned chest of drawers with mirror and candlesticks against a sloped ceiling. It is the room she occupied after George Washington's death in 1799; its window overlooks his tomb, and she died there in 1802. The chamber belongs to the Mount Vernon mansion, the Potomac River plantation that the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association preserved and opened to visitors in the 1860s. The furnishings evoke the domestic life of the Washington household in the late 18th century.
