About this postcard
The card shows Martha Washington's bedchamber at Mount Vernon, with a canopied four-poster bed hung with fringed white curtains, a wing chair and footstool, a covered stool, and a red-japanned chest of drawers with mirror and candlesticks against a sloped ceiling. The room is preserved as part of the Mount Vernon mansion, George Washington's Potomac River plantation home, which the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association saved and opened to visitors in the 1860s. Furnishings of this kind were displayed to evoke the domestic life of the Washington household in the late 18th century.
