About this postcard
The Massachusetts State House stands on Beacon Hill, its gold dome and columned portico rising above a lawn. The equestrian statue of General Joseph Hooker sits in the foreground, and a large office block and parked cars of the 1930s and 1940s line the street at right. The caption notes that the site was part of John Hancock's estate and the highest point in Boston. It traces the building's growth from the "Bullfinch Front" (Bulfinch) of 1795-97 to the Bryant addition of 1853-56 and the State House Annex of 1889-95. Charles Bulfinch designed the original State House, and the dome is gilded in 23-karat gold leaf. Daniel Chester French's Hooker statue, dedicated in 1903, faces the building; Hooker had commanded Union troops in the Civil War.
