About this postcard
The Massachusetts State House in Boston, its gilded dome and columned portico rising behind a grassy lawn, with the equestrian statue of General Joseph Hooker in front and a large office block at right; automobiles of 1930s-40s vintage line the street. The State House, designed by Charles Bulfinch and completed in 1798, remains the seat of Massachusetts government on Beacon Hill, and its dome was gilded in 23-karat gold leaf. The Hooker statue by Daniel Chester French was dedicated in 1903 facing the building he served as a Union general.
