About this postcard
The Mellon Institute of Industrial Research stands at Fifth and Bellefield Avenues in Pittsburgh's Oakland district, shown as a long neoclassical building of pale stone. A tall colonnade of fluted columns rises above a rusticated base, with a street lamp and lawn in the foreground. Founded by Andrew W. Mellon and Richard B. Mellon and associated with the University of Pittsburgh, the institute pursued scientific investigation for industry through a system of fellowships, each devoted to a different research subject, and maintained a department of pure chemistry. The building was completed in 1937 and later became part of Carnegie Mellon University.
