About this postcard

An elevated view of the Memorial Amphitheatre at Arlington, Virginia: a great elliptical colonnade of white marble enclosing tiered seating, with a columned entrance portico and a red-tiled roof at the front, set in lawns with walks and a curving memorial drive below. Dedicated in 1920, the amphitheatre was built in Arlington National Cemetery to honor American service members and has hosted state funerals, Memorial Day observances, and the Easter sunrise service; the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier lies just below its colonnade. The building's neoclassical design is modeled on classical Roman amphitheatres.
