About this postcard

An elevated view shows the Memorial Amphitheatre in Arlington National Cemetery: a white marble ellipse of tiered seating enclosed by a colonnade, with a columned entrance portico and a red-tiled roof at the front. A broad stairway leads from the surrounding garden and lawns, and a curving drive passes below. The memorial honors the nation's dead and seats 5,000 in the amphitheater proper, with several thousand more in the colonnade. Completed in 1920, the amphitheater was designed by Carrere & Hastings of New York and faces across the Potomac toward the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. It has hosted Memorial Day observances, state funerals, and the Easter sunrise service; the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier lies just below the colonnade.
