About this postcard
The picture shows the brick Memorial House at Wakefield, the George Washington Birthplace National Monument in Westmoreland County, Virginia, with its dormer windows, twin chimneys and a small lattice-sided outbuilding under a large bare tree. The card's own caption names the site as Washington's birthplace; the original plantation house where he was born in 1732 burned in 1780, and the colonial-style Memorial House seen here was erected in the early 1930s by the Wakefield National Memorial Association to commemorate the site, which became a national monument in 1930.
