A tall pale stone obelisk with a pyramidal cap stands on a stepped base among trees draped with Spanish moss, with a flagpole beside it. The monument commemorates the American victory at the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815, when Andrew Jackson's forces turned back the British. Louisiana began the memorial in 1855, and Congress provided funds to complete it in 1908. The site is now Chalmette National Historical Park, near New Orleans, administered by the National Park Service.
