About this postcard

The card pictures Mercy Hospital in Valley City, North Dakota: a four-story, cream-colored Mission/Spanish Colonial Revival building with red tile roofs, arched windows and balconies, a domed corner tower, and an arched entrance court, set behind a lawn with young trees and beds of flowers. Valley City, in the Sheyenne River valley, was a regional trade and railroad center of southeastern North Dakota, and a hospital of this name served the community in the early twentieth century. The rendering emphasizes the building's Mediterranean detailing, a style sometimes adopted for institutional buildings of the period.
