Across the water, Middle Beach shows a row of gabled summer cottages and a small observation or water tower behind a rocky beach. Westbrook was a summer colony on Long Island Sound, and the view captures the mix of cottages and open shore that drew summer visitors. A small cross marks the cottage where Helen G. Fuller was staying; she wrote to Charlotte Hassett in Amesbury, Massachusetts, "The house with the cross above it is where we are staying."
