About this postcard
A wide view across the lawns and tree-lined drives of the Midway Plaisance toward the long row of red-roofed Gothic dormitories and quadrangles at the University of Chicago, with a tower rising among them. The Midway was laid out as the mile-long pleasure ground of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, where the first Ferris wheel turned, and after the fair it became a landscaped park between the campus and Hyde Park. The university, founded in 1890, was still young when this view was made; its collegiate Gothic buildings along the park went up largely in the first decade of the twentieth century.
