Milking Time, Irish farmyard with cows and pigs, circa 1903

Card type

About this postcard

A farmyard at milking time: two brown-and-white cows stand in a straw-strewn yard between whitewashed, thatched cottages. A woman in a red shawl and white apron pauses by a wooden fence, while a second figure in green stoops beside a dark cow. Chickens peck in the foreground and pink pigs root at the right, with green hills and a cloudy sky behind. The scene belongs to Raphael Tuck & Sons' Irish Life series, which presented rural Irish work as orderly and picturesque. The thatched cottages, whitewash, and mixed livestock suggest a small holding where dairy work, poultry, and pigs belonged to the same household economy.
