The mill dam at Deer Isle, Maine, holds back a pond where a road and a rail-like fence cross the water. A white clapboard mill or store building and a larger brown wooden building with an exterior stair stand among trees; the masts of a schooner show at right and an American flag flies at far left. Deer Isle, in Penobscot Bay, was known in the early 1900s for granite quarrying, fishing, and small coastal milling, and the dam and mill buildings reflect the local water-powered industry that served the island's coastal communities.
White border along the bottom carrying the printed caption "Mill Dam, Deer Isle, Maine"; handwritten message in ink on the front: "Remembrances from Uncle Lawrence."; light edge and corner wear, small surface specks.
Postmark: DIRIGO ISL AUG 8 1906 MAINE; receiving mark: AMESBURY AUG 9 7-AM 1906 MASS. Undivided back with "This side for the Address only."; green Litho-Chrome imprint, 1¢ Franklin stamp; light edge wear and a few foxing spots.
