Miniature of Rachel Donelson Jackson, Washington, DC, 1815
About this postcard
An oval-framed miniature portrait of Rachel Donelson Jackson shows her in a dark dress with a white lace cap and veil. The caption names Anna C. Peale as the miniaturist and dates the work to Washington, D.C., in 1815. After her death, Andrew Jackson carried the miniature close to his chest each day and set it beside his Bible on a bedside table at night. Rachel Donelson Robards Jackson (1767-1828) was Jackson's wife. She died after his 1828 election and before his inauguration, so their niece Emily Donelson served as White House hostess during his presidency.
