The stone facade of Mission de la Purisima Concepcion rises behind trees, with twin bell towers, an arched entrance, and a pale sky. The caption calls it the "First Mission," built in 1731, and traces the name to the Virgin Mary and Spanish Viceroy Don Juan de Acuña. Franciscan friars used the mission in their work among local Native communities, and the church stands among San Antonio's surviving Spanish colonial missions.
