Mission Dolores, San Francisco, California, circa 1935
About this postcard
The card shows the front facade of Mission San Francisco de Asís — Mission Dolores — with its low gabled roof, arched entrance, balcony and cross above the gable, framed by a palm and a small tree. Founded in 1776 by Father Francisco Palóu, it is the oldest surviving building in San Francisco and the sixth of the Spanish missions in California; the present adobe church was completed in 1791 and survived the 1906 earthquake and fire. The mission's small cemetery beside the church is the burial place of many early Californio settlers and Ohlone converts.
