Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, San Gabriel, California, circa 1940
About this postcard
The card shows the long, buttressed stone facade and bell-crowned front of Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, framed by tall palm trees and a bed of red flowers along the street. Founded in 1771 by Father Junípero Serra as the fourth of the California missions, the present church was begun in 1791 and completed in the early 1800s, and the mission is often called the "Godmother of the Pueblo of Los Angeles." Its fortress-like walls, arched belfry with hanging bells, and Spanish colonial detailing are the features highlighted here.
