About this postcard
The card shows the long, buttressed stone facade of Mission San Gabriel Archangel, its bell-crowned front framed by tall palms and a strip of red flowers along the street. The mission is identified as the fourth California mission, established on September 8, 1771, by Fr. Angel Somera and Fr. Pedro Cambon, and set in a valley about nine miles east of Los Angeles and four miles from Pasedena (Pasadena). Its fortress-like walls and arched belfry with hanging bells reflect its role as a frontier religious center; the present church was begun in 1791 and completed in the early 1800s.
