About this postcard
The stone church of Mission San Jose stands above a garden planted with cacti and flowering shrubs, with palm fronds at the right edge of the frame. A bell tower and dome rise from the church, and the mission's stone walls fill the scene. The card calls San Jose the second mission, built in 1720. The mission was founded that year along the San Antonio River, the second of the city's Spanish colonial missions; the present stone church was completed later in the 18th century. Its grounds combine native desert plants with ornamental plantings.
