About this postcard

The card shows the stone church of Mission San Juan de Capistrano in San Antonio, with its arcaded portico, stepped gable, and a bell tower topped by a cross. Bare and leafy trees frame the building, and a picket fence and lawn sit in the foreground. The caption calls it the Third Mission, built in 1731, and describes it as a "picturesque ruin" that recalls the Spanish colonial past. Its "Santa Giovanni De Caspistrano" and 1836 birth year appear to garble San Giovanni da Capistrano, the Franciscan friar born in 1386. The sender's note records a stop in San Antonio and a planned departure for Mexico.
