Mississippi River crescent, New Orleans, LA, circa 1930

About this postcard

The Mississippi River curves around New Orleans in a wide crescent, with dense city blocks and wharves lining the riverbanks. The aerial view shows why the city is known as the Crescent City: the river wraps around the urban edge before continuing on its winding course to the Gulf of Mexico, 107 miles downstream. New Orleans developed as a major river port, and the wharves along the bend were central to its trade.
