The Missouri River stretches wide and calm past Chamberlain, South Dakota, with wooded bluffs along the left bank and a cloudy sky overhead. Chamberlain, the Brule County seat, sat where the river cut through the hills and served as a crossing and rail point for the surrounding farm country. The sender had arrived at Stamford in the middle of the night and planned to drive north through rough hill roads, expecting to reach Presho the next day.
