About this postcard

A long, low brick building with red tile roofs, white columned entrance bays and skylights, identified by the printed caption as the Monkey House of the New York Zoological Park; visitors in early-1900s dress stroll the gravel walk in front, with potted palms and clipped evergreens set out along the facade. The New York Zoological Park (the Bronx Zoo) opened in 1899 under the New York Zoological Society, and its early animal houses were designed in a Beaux-Arts manner to serve both the animals and the visiting public. The Monkey House was one of the park's original exhibition buildings of the early 1900s.
