About this postcard
A grassy, mound-shaped island ringed by a moat serves as the monkey island at the Overton Park Zoo in Memphis, Tennessee; a rocky feeding ledge and small shelters sit on the slope, with trees, fencing and a small red vehicle visible beyond. Overton Park was laid out in the 1890s on land donated by the Overton family, and its zoo opened in 1906, becoming one of the city's best-known attractions before it closed in 2008. Open-moated monkey islands of this kind were a common feature of American zoos in the early twentieth century.
