About this postcard
Monkey Island in Washington Park, Milwaukee, is a rocky, terraced mound surrounded by a moat, with monkeys scattered along the shore and on a rowboat. A small dark-red building marked "BATH HOUSE" stands at the water's edge. The island was billed as the "unique summer home for monkeys," a large oval mound, 165 by 87 feet, ringed by a 30-foot moat, with a cave for shelter in bad weather. Washington Park was the home of the Milwaukee County Zoo from 1892 until the early 1960s. Monkey Island was one of the zoo's best-known exhibits, giving visitors a close view of monkeys outdoors in the warm months.
