About this postcard
The view shows the Montgomery Government Lock and Dam spanning the Ohio River, with its row of massive concrete piers, a truss-and-roadway deck carried across the crest, and water spilling through the gates below a wooded hillside. The caption names it as a federal (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) navigation structure on the Ohio River. Montgomery Island Dam was one of the fixed-crest dams built in the 1930s to give the Ohio a dependable nine-foot navigation channel, and it stood near Industry in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, downstream from Pittsburgh.
