About this postcard

Monticello at night, its neoclassical portico and windows lit from within, a full moon overhead and trees around the hilltop house. Thomas Jefferson designed the house himself and lived there until his death in 1826; the plantation outside Charlottesville later became a historic site and a steady subject for souvenir views. Night scenes were a common treatment in the linen-card years, setting the white columns against a dark sky. The publisher, the Asheville Post Card Co. of Asheville, North Carolina, was a prolific producer of linen-texture cards in the 1930s and 1940s.
