About this postcard

A stone memorial column topped by a figure stands on a wooded slope near Yorktown Heights, with a path or streambed winding through dense foliage in the foreground and a pale blue sky above. The view is printed in tinted lithograph color, the trees turning in autumn. Yorktown Heights lies in the hill country of northern Westchester County, New York, a landscape of small farms, stone walls, and second-growth woods that by the 1920s also helped supply New York City's water from the Croton watershed. The card was posted a few miles away in Katonah. The writer reports "a very rainy, horrid day" and notes that the party went down that afternoon and would all go down again the next morning, a small glimpse of a weekend visit to the country from the city.
