About this postcard

The view looks northeast across Monument Place (now Monument Circle) in Indianapolis, with the base and lower sculptural groups of the Soldiers' and Sailors Monument filling the right foreground, an ornamental lamp post and small lawn in the center, and a streetcar-less open plaza where pedestrians and a horse-drawn wagon move about. Behind the circle stand a red-brick commercial block with a corner turret, a Gothic-style stone church with a tall spire, and several office buildings. The Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors Monument, designed by Bruno Schmitz, was completed in 1901 and anchors the center of the city; Christ Church (Episcopal), visible at left, stood on the Circle until it was demolished in the 1950s.
