About this postcard
The view looks northeast across Monument Place, now Monument Circle, with the base and lower sculptural groups of the Soldiers' and Sailors Monument filling the right foreground. An ornamental lamp post and a small lawn occupy the center, while pedestrians and a horse-drawn wagon move through the open plaza. Behind the circle are a red-brick commercial block with a corner turret, a Gothic Revival stone church with a tall spire, and several office buildings. The monument, designed by Bruno Schmitz and completed in 1901, anchors the center of Indianapolis. Christ Church Cathedral, the Gothic Revival Episcopal church at left, was already a familiar landmark on the Circle.
