About this postcard

A view across the paved square of Lenoir, North Carolina, where a tall white obelisk monument stands among shrubs and trees, flanked by a red brick commercial block on the left and a long light-colored brick building with rows of windows on the right, a flowering tree in bloom before it. The card's own caption names the spot Monument Square. Lenoir, the seat of Caldwell County in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, laid out its courthouse square in the mid-nineteenth century, and such squares typically held the county's Civil War memorial; the monument here rises in the open plaza at the center of town.
