Monument Terrace in Lynchburg, Virginia, rises from Church Street toward the old courthouse hill in a long run of stone steps. Lawns and trees flank the stairway, and a dark bronze soldier stands on a pedestal at the foot of the steps. At the crest sits a columned classical building with a cupola; a church spire and a tall brick tower show through the trees behind it. The terrace was laid out in the 1920s as a war memorial, and the statue at its base is known as The Listening Post.
