About this postcard

A tall column monument topped by a winged figure stands in the Praça Duque de Caxias, surrounded by palms and dense greenery. Benches and a grassy foreground suggest a public square used for strolling and gathering, with the sky tinted pink and blue above the scene. The monument commemorates 2 July, the date in 1823 when Portuguese forces withdrew from Bahia and Brazilian forces secured the province. The square carries the name of Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, the Duque de Caxias, a central figure in Brazil's military history.
