Moody Street commercial blocks, Waltham, MA, 1907

About this postcard

A view down Moody Street, Waltham's main commercial thoroughfare, taken from the middle of the roadway. Multi-story commercial blocks line both sides, their upper windows shaded by striped and white awnings, with storefronts at street level. Streetcar tracks run down the center of the wide, mostly empty street, and a few pedestrians and a bicyclist are the only traffic in view. In the first decade of the 1900s Waltham was an industrial city known for watchmaking and textile mills, and Moody Street was where the people who worked in those shops and factories came to do their buying. The trolley tracks in the foreground carried them in from the surrounding neighborhoods and nearby towns.
