A moonlit view across Lake Pepin, with the moon's light reflecting on the water and a low, dark shoreline along the horizon. Lake Pepin is a natural widening of the Mississippi River on the Minnesota-Wisconsin border, roughly 22 miles long. It was long a scenic landmark for river travelers, and Lake City, Minnesota, on the lake, became a summer resort town in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
