A full moon hangs in a cloud-streaked sky over a broad lake, laying a golden path of light across the water. Dark evergreen silhouettes frame the near shore, a single tall pine rises at the right, and low hills run along the far horizon.
The Rangeley Lakes, a chain of lakes in western Maine, drew summer visitors from the cities for fishing, boating, and cool mountain air. Moonlight scenes were a popular subject for scenic postcards of the region, and this one turns the water into the brightest part of the picture.
