About this postcard

A crowded corner at Mott and Pell Streets in Manhattan's Chinatown. Storefronts with awnings and neon signs line the block, advertising Chinese groceries, kitchen equipment, and restaurants. Pedestrians fill the sidewalk, and an automobile appears in the street. Some signs carry Chinese characters. By the 1940s, Mott and Pell Streets formed the commercial heart of New York's Chinese community. Groceries, import shops, and restaurants clustered there, serving neighborhood residents and visitors to Chinatown. The district had grown around these blocks since the late 19th century.
