The picture shows the craggy east face of Mount of the Holy Cross in the Sawatch Range of Colorado, its famous cross-shaped snow couloir standing out white against the dark rock. The mountain's 14,000-foot summit and the cross of snow made it a national curiosity after William Henry Jackson's 1873 photograph, and it drew pilgrims and tourists for decades. The peak was incorporated into the Holy Cross Wilderness, and the cross itself has become less permanent as snowfields recede.
Linen-textured stock with visible crosshatch weave; image runs to the edges with no white border.
No postmark. Divided-back layout with linen-textured front, E C K Co stamp box, printed descriptive caption and E. C. Kropp imprint; pencil "100" price notation at top right. Light age toning only.
