About this postcard

The four granite heads of Mount Rushmore, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, look out from the mountainside against a plain blue sky in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Gutzon Borglum began carving the memorial in 1927, blasting the granite and bringing out one face at a time. Washington was dedicated in 1936 and Roosevelt, the last of the four, in 1939; work ended with Borglum's death in 1941, leaving the figures unfinished below the heads. The monument was intended to mark the birth, growth, preservation and development of the nation. The view was issued by the Black Hills Post Card Co. of Deadwood, the old gold rush town at the edge of the Hills.
