About this postcard
View across Diamond Lake toward the spire of Mount Thielsen, framed by tall pines in the foreground and a low building and boats along the far shore. The lake sits in the Umpqua National Forest of southern Oregon at the base of Thielsen, a deeply eroded volcanic peak whose sharp pinnacle earned it the nickname "the Lightning Rod of the Cascades" for the strikes it draws. Roads reached the area in the early 20th century, and by mid-century the lake was a well-known stop for southern Oregon vacationers, with boats and a small resort serving summer visitors.
