View across Diamond Lake toward the spire of Mount Thielsen, framed by tall pines in the foreground and a low building and boats along the far shore. Diamond Lake sits in the Umpqua National Forest of southern Oregon at the base of Mount Thielsen, a deeply eroded volcanic peak whose sharp pinnacle earned it the nickname "the Lightning Rod of the Cascades." The lake and surrounding forest became a popular recreation destination after roads reached the area in the early 20th century.
