About this postcard

The card shows Mount Vernon, George Washington's plantation house on the Potomac River in Virginia, viewed across the lawn: a white clapboard mansion with a long colonnade of square columns along the river front, a balustraded roof deck topped by a cupola and weathervane, and a small columned side porch at left. Washington inherited the estate in 1761 and expanded the house in the 1750s–1770s; it became a national shrine after the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association purchased and restored it in 1858. The tinted view with porch chairs and benches reflects the early 20th-century tourist presentation of the site.
