About this postcard

A view across the lawns and curving walks of Mount Vernon Place in Baltimore, with the bronze seated figure of George Peabody on its granite pedestal at center, an ornate multi-globe lamp post beside it, and a large classical building at right. The Peabody statue, sculpted by William Wetmore Story, was dedicated in 1890 and honors the Baltimore-born financier and philanthropist George Peabody, founder of the Peabody Institute that faces the square. Mount Vernon Place, laid out around the Washington Monument, remains one of the city's best-known formal squares.
