About this postcard
The view looks across the lawns and curving walks of Mount Vernon Place in Baltimore toward the seated bronze figure of George Peabody on its granite pedestal. An ornate multi-globe lamp post stands beside the statue, and a large classical building rises at right. The Peabody statue, sculpted by William Wetmore Story, was dedicated in 1890. It honors George Peabody, a Massachusetts-born financier who made his fortune partly in Baltimore and founded the Peabody Institute facing the square. Mount Vernon Place, laid out around the Washington Monument, was one of the city's grandest formal squares.
