A paved mountain road curves along the base of a steep, brightly banded rock cliff, passing through a short concrete gallery or tunnel portal before continuing down into a forested valley. Conifers cover the slopes on both sides of the canyon, and distant blue ridges close the horizon under a pale sky. The scene is typical of the scenic mountain highways built in the American West in the early twentieth century, where galleries were cut into cliff faces to protect the roadway from rockfall.
